Beth’s Books Reading List: January 2019

January was a quiet month for reading! I only read six books – one non-fiction and five fiction.  Fortunately I’m not racing to meet a goal so if I care more about reading good stuff! This month contained mostly good books that I would recommend, with just one dud.

Here’s what I read in January.

Fiction

Verses for the Dead (Agent Pendergast Series) by Preston & Child

Agent Pendergast is investigating a series of murder in Miami Beach. Much to his dismay, he’s also been assigned a new partner. The new partner is a very good addition to the book and is a well-done and likable character. The series strays away from the more mystical Pendergast books, instead focusing on the mystery, the evidence and the action. This was a quick read and I really enjoyed it.

Demon Accords Novels

This is a fun urban fantasy series. It follows a group of supernatural characters, including some fallen angels, vampires, witches and a sentient AI. Oh, and elves and fairies. These books are fun, light reads.

Summer Reign

Demon Divine

Rogues (This was an earlier book that I missed somehow and went back to)

Red War (Mitch Rapp #13)

I’ve really liked the Mitch Rapp series, following a CIA super-spy’s adventures across the world. Unfortunately, the original author passed away in 2013. A new author has picked up the series but it’s not quite the same. With war looming between Russia and the US, Rapp and a defected Russian assassin must figure out what’s happening and defuse the situation. I finished this book, but it took forever. It didn’t have the typical fast pace and engrossing plot of earlier Mitch Rapp books. I don’t recommend it.

Non-Fiction

It was a pretty light month for non-fiction! I just read one non-fiction book – and it was a Kindle Unlimited find!

The Mindset of Organization: Take Back Your House One Phase at a Time by Lisa Woodruff

I found Lisa Woodruff of Organize 365 when she was a guest on the Best of Both Worlds podcast. I really like her logical approach to home organization! When I saw that her book was on Kindle Unlimited, I snapped it up. The book is a helpful take on home organization. It’s well-organized and has personal anecdotes interspersed throughout to keep things interesting. I definitely recommend it!

WHAT DID YOU READ THIS MONTH?

Any recommendations? What have you read and enjoyed lately? I’m planning to read Gretchen Rubin’s new book, Outer Order, Inner Calm, when it comes out in March. I also have JK Rowling’s adult books on my list, on my grandma’s recommendation (many of my favorite books come from her suggestions)!
